Let's do this thing!

Firstly, let me apologize for the length of time it's taking for some actual content to arrive on this blog. Pressure of work, blah blah blah. Yes, I’ve got a lot on, but haven’t we all? You either find the time, or make the time. So here we go.

I’m going to post at least once a week, more often if I can manage it, or if the mood takes me. I had intended to kick this blog off by re-presenting my guide to comic book lettering using Adobe Illustrator -- I’m in the process of updating the downloadable PDF and I want to present it here one section at a time so people can ask questions or point out bits that aren’t clear using the Comments and I can improve the guide accordingly.

However, that’s taking a bit longer than I’d planned, too! It’s coming, and soon, just not quite yet. Sorry!

So… henceforth, there will be something here every week. It may be about lettering, it may be about comics, it may be a recipe or a picture of one of my cats. In fact, here’s a picture of one of my cats -- Jojo -- helping me work.

If anyone has any specific questions that arise from anything I post, feedback is positively encouraged via the comments section, or if anyone has a request for the subject of a future post, likewise make it known there.

Onwards and upwards!

  1. Well well what have we here then?

First question: If it is unwise to add an exclamation mark to a sound effect, does that mean your title graphic is wrong or does that count as speech?

I will have more questions as you progress ;)

  3. Your cat does all your lettering for you- admit it.
Or else, perhaps you are a sentient cat.
    Which is it?

  6. Hi Jim - can you look at this and tell me if it's allowed? My boyfriend is having a spaz because I've put a balloon tail over one of the character's faces and I want to be able to say 'Jim says, "blow it out your arse"...'

  7. Hah! Domestic? There's no way I'm getting in the middle of that! :-P

Strictly speaking, no, you shouldn't put tails on characters' faces. However, the first speaker in any panel should also be drawn on the left, so the lettering is left with limited options due to the composition of the panel itself.

Yes, I'm very comfy on this fence. Thanks for asking!

  8. Ah. So that's what "Remove Content" does…

    Fascinating. /Strokeybeard

  9. I'm translating that as, "Excellent compositional choices - you're clearly quite the auteur; tell Denton to blow it out his arse." Thanks for your help!
